Silk is one of the most popular, high-quality, and durable materials. If you maintain it properly, you will enjoy its softness and beauty for many years. Real, natural silk costs a lot, but when you buy clothes, accessories, or silk bedding, you can be sure that they will last long.

These are some of the most important things to be which you should pay attention to.

Watch the Label Carefully Before You Buy

In recent years, online shopping has become a favorite for many of us, but we can often make a mistake when choosing if we buy on unverified sites. If you like to buy online, you must inspect the label before you decide to buy something. Sometimes the product title doesn’t say too much, so you should read the technical specification about the materials from which the product is made.

You will often see adjectives silk and silky in the product description. Sellers use this for marketing purposes when they want to indicate smooth and fine fabric regardless of the real material.

The Price Says a Lot

If the price for the silk item you want to buy is too good to be true, think twice. There is a good possibility that it is a scam.

When you see the offer for a silk scarf for $10 it is clear that it is not made from natural silk. Real silk is about 10 times more expensive than the artificial one. So, if it is cheap, it isn’t really silk.

Luster And Smoothness Test

Natural silk has its unique qualities, luster, extra fineness and super soft feel. The color of the material in different types of light can change a bit depending on how you hold it and the angle you look at it.  On the other hand, artificial silk or other similar materials which resemble silk, have flat white sheen.

Also, try to do the smoothness test and feel the texture of the material. Natural silk will run smoothly across your hands and will drape naturally around the body.

Artificial materials will be stiffer, and not so smooth when you try to drape it around. Also, one interesting test you can do when you are buying silk products is to rub them with your hands, if you feel warmth, it is natural silk. If not, it is possible that the  silk is not real. Because it is impossible to experience warmth by rubbing artificial silk or other similar textile material.

Burn Test

This test must be taken carefully. You can try it with a small thread from the material and burn it with the flame. Natural silk will smell like burnt hair. The flame is invisible and it will stop burning as soon as you remove the flame. The ashes are brittle, black and crispy.

With artificial silk the experience will be the opposite. When the synthetic material burns, there is a smell of plastic and no ashes are produced. It will melt as soon as it is near to the flame. With this step you need to be really careful due to its dangerous nature.

When you buy some of our products, we provide you with a silk sample which you can test at home with an instruction card on how to do it.
